The shoetree of Waterloo’s Beechwood neighborhood

shoetreeThere is an unusual cultural phenomenon happening in Waterloo; a shoetree.  An empty field owned for a long time by Grace Mennonite Church and recently sold to a Toronto Developer has a willow tree in it and in this tree hangs or is affixed by nail a multitude of shoes.

No one knows for sure what this all means. Is it a meeting place to buy drugs? Is it suburban graffiti? Is it art?

Residents of the area said that shoes started appearing over a decade ago. It’s just a regular old tree with a bunch of shoes in it. But if you want to see it, see it soon as area is set for a large townhouse development and the tree has to go.
