Single family dwellings up, condos down in K-W. More on housing starts

You just have to read a few articles about housing starts in Canada to get mixed message about the state of the Canadian Economy. Housing starts (new construction of houses) has long been an economic indicator for the overall state of the economy. Recently reports seem mixed, some regions are doing well (Waterloo Region, Guelph, Calgary) others not so much.

Someone said to me on Monday, “You know, all those people who got thrown out of work last year, their unemployment benefits are going to be ending about now. Now we’re going to see what the economic recovery really looks like”.
Personally, I never worry about things that I cannot control. I’m happy that housing starts are up in Waterloo Region mostly because we need the houses, not because it bodes well for the economy, though this is good too.
